Real Madrid have officially announced the departure of head coach Xabi Alonso, bringing his tenure at the club to an end following the 2025–26 season.
The decision comes in the aftermath of Los Blancos’ dramatic 3–2 defeat to arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, played in Saudi Arabia. Shortly after the loss, the club confirmed that former defender Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as Alonso’s replacement.
In a statement, Real Madrid paid glowing tribute to the Spanish tactician, highlighting his enduring bond with the club.
“Xabi Alonso will always carry the affection and admiration of all Madridistas because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home,” the statement read.
Despite recording the best defensive statistics in La Liga this season, Real Madrid currently sit four points behind leaders Barcelona, having registered 14 wins, three draws, and two defeats.
Alonso took charge of the club ahead of the 2025–26 campaign, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti after an outstanding spell at Bayer Leverkusen. During his time in Germany, he led Leverkusen to a historic, unbeaten Bundesliga title and lifted the German Cup, firmly establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.
A Champions League winner with Real Madrid during his playing career, Alonso’s connection to the club runs deep, making his departure a significant moment for both parties.
His successor, Álvaro Arbeloa, is no stranger to the Santiago Bernabéu. A former teammate of Alonso, Arbeloa has been part of Real Madrid’s coaching structure since 2020, working extensively with the club’s youth teams. His promotion signals a continued commitment to internal development and the club’s long-term philosophy.
Real Madrid are expected to begin a new chapter under Arbeloa as they aim to close the gap on Barcelona and compete strongly on all fronts for the remainder of the season.
