Pressure group Arise Ghana has formally petitioned the United States Embassy in Accra, demanding the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta. The group alleges that Mr. Ofori-Atta has relocated to the US to evade accountability for his role in Ghana’s economic challenges, and insists that he must return to face public scrutiny and possible legal processes.
In its petition, Arise Ghana accused the former minister of presiding over policies that contributed to rising debt levels and economic instability. The group argued that his departure undermines efforts to ensure transparency and justice in governance. They emphasized that holding public officials accountable is critical to restoring public confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
The call for extradition has sparked debate among political observers and citizens alike. While some view the petition as a legitimate demand for accountability, others caution that such matters must follow due legal and diplomatic procedures. The US Embassy has yet to issue an official response, but the petition underscores growing public pressure for stronger measures against perceived impunity among former government officials.
