Authorities Crack Down on ‘Trotro’ Overcharging; Multiple Arrests Made
Accra, Ghana — January 30, 2026 Transport authorities have launched a nationwide crackdown on overpricing in public transport, leading to multiple arrests across major terminals.
The operation, carried out in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service and transport unions, targeted drivers and conductors accused of charging fares above approved rates. Officials say the move is part of efforts to protect commuters from exploitation and restore confidence in the public transport system.
According to the Ministry of Transport, enforcement teams were deployed to busy hubs in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi, where several offenders were apprehended. Passengers at these terminals welcomed the intervention, noting that fare hikes had become frequent and unjustified despite stable fuel prices.
Authorities have warned that the crackdown will continue in the coming weeks, with offenders facing fines, license suspensions, or prosecution. Transport unions have been urged to cooperate fully, ensuring that drivers adhere to regulated fares.
The Ministry emphasized that the initiative is not only about punishing offenders but also about safeguarding the livelihoods of ordinary Ghanaians who rely on trotros daily. Officials assured commuters that monitoring will remain strict to prevent a recurrence of the practice.
