Cape Coast, Ghana – January 20, 2026 The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), in partnership with GRIDCo, has announced a planned five-hour power outage in Cape Coast and surrounding communities. The interruption, scheduled from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, is part of ongoing works to enhance electricity supply reliability in the Central Region. Engineers are expected to complete and commission a new 66MVA transformer at the Cape Coast Substation during this period.
According to ECG, the temporary shutdown is necessary to allow technicians to safely carry out the upgrade and ensure the long-term stability of the power grid. The company emphasized that while the outage may inconvenience residents and businesses, the installation of the transformer will significantly improve service delivery and reduce the frequency of unplanned blackouts in the area.
Local reactions have been mixed, with some residents expressing frustration over the timing of the outage, while others welcomed the improvements as a step toward addressing Ghana’s broader energy challenges. Authorities have advised households and businesses to make contingency arrangements during the downtime, stressing that the upgrade is part of a wider effort to modernize the country’s power infrastructure.
