Gun Amnesty Deadline Extended to January 30, 2026

Surrender Your Guns or License them.

Accra, Ghana — January 30, 2026 The Ministry of the Interior has announced a final extension of the nationwide Gun Amnesty Programme, giving citizens until the end of today to voluntarily surrender or register unlicensed firearms.

The initiative, which seeks to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons and enhance public safety, has already seen strong participation across the country. Officials say the extension was granted in response to the high level of public interest and cooperation shown since the programme’s launch.

Under the amnesty, individuals who hand over unregistered firearms to the police or register them with the appropriate authorities will not face prosecution. The Ministry emphasized that this final deadline is non-negotiable, urging citizens to take advantage of the opportunity before enforcement measures resume.

Interior Minister representatives reiterated that the programme is part of broader efforts to strengthen national security and reduce violent crime. Security analysts have welcomed the move, noting that illegal firearms remain a significant challenge in many communities.

The Ministry has assured the public that designated police stations nationwide remain open throughout the day to receive surrendered weapons. Citizens are encouraged to act promptly to avoid legal consequences after the deadline lapses.
