Accra, May 4, 2026 — The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) officially commenced across Ghana today, marking the start of an intensive week of testing for junior high school students nationwide.

According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), 619,985 candidates are sitting for the exams this year, making it one of the largest cohorts in the country’s history. The examinations, which run from May 4 to May 11, will determine placement into senior high schools and technical institutions.

Education officials have assured the public of strict measures to uphold integrity and fairness during the process. Security has been tightened at examination centers, and invigilators have been briefed to ensure compliance with WAEC regulations.

Parents, teachers, and community leaders have expressed optimism that this year’s candidates will excel, despite challenges such as recent power outages and economic pressures. The Ministry of Education has urged students to remain focused, disciplined, and confident as they take this crucial step in their academic journey.

The BECE remains a milestone in Ghana’s educational calendar, shaping the future of thousands of young learners and reinforcing the nation’s commitment to accessible, quality education.
